On this page you can find theinformation you need in order to design, create and carry out a stellarScience Fair project.

From the Downloads section on the righthand side of this page, you should download and print out the ScienceFair pdf that will provide you with guidelines for your project as wella time line and checklist for what you need to accomplish.

You will learn more about how to start your experiment in assembly and in your classroom.

Entries close the end of Week 10 and marking and judging will occur in Week 11.

Ethics Approval

It may be difficult to determine if you need to apply for ethics approval. Read the summary to help you decide.

An application and approval is needed if you are:

- Surveying people

- Product tasting or applying product to self or others

- Getting participants (including self) to carry out an activity. This also involves a lot of technology experiments as someone has to throw the ball/paper plane, etc.

- Investigating micro-organisms. Note: All micro-organism work must be either incubated at school (no incubator) or at a commercial facility at less than 25 degrees. It can be done over 25 degrees if a trained person is the only person handling the experiment. Part of the planning involves disposal of the specimens which must be sent away to be disposed of correctly.

- Investigating animals. The application for this is on the website. It goes through a paid committee. Note: If native animals are involved, the child has to get a permit from DOC and consent from iwi.

Also note that the animal ethics approval must be done entirely on the science fair website and that other ethics approval must be submitted on line as well as have a hard copy posted.

Deadline for ethics approval: 5th May.

Mr. Codyre's Experiment

Mr. Codyre and Erica have started their own experiment in order to help you all learn the scientific process. Check out their page with weekly updates on how the project is progressing. We are still deciding on a name, too, so if you have a suggestion, visit the Assembly page and make your suggestion on the side bar.
