Our Experiment
Mr. Codyre and Erica have started a science experiment of their own in order to show everyone the step by step processes you need to follow in order to create a successful Science Fair project. Check back each week to see how our experiment is progressing.
Last week, Erica was concerned about how many sugary drinks Mr. Codyre was drinking! We started thinking that just maybe these common drinks that we consume on a daily basis might be doing us more harm than good.
After polling our students, we picked our favourite title:
We first started by writing down the observations we made that sparked our curiosity about the health of our teeth:
After we made our observations, we started to develop our question and what the aim of experiment will be. We could ask a lot of different questions based on the information we have, but we have to be very specific and narrow it down to one particular question. We decided on this one:
Now that we know what we're investigating, we have to come up with a hypothesis about what we think is going to happen.
It would be silly to start an experiment without having at least a quick look at what kind of information is out there on your topic. You have heaps of resources to check including books and magazines, your teacher or parents, online and of course Google! Be careful about the information you get online, however, and make sure it's from a good source before you believe what they say.
This is the hypothesis that we came up with. Your hypothesis can be as in depth or simple as you want it to be, but make sure that you aren't trying to predict too many things within one experiment and within a short amount of time. Sometimes simple is better.
You have to make sure you come up with detailed methods about how you're going to carry out each step of your experiment, too. The important thing is finding out how you can measure the variable in your experiment accurately.
Here's what we'll be doing:
And this is how we'll keep track of the changes in the teeth each week.
Here is our first week's results:
After a few weeks in the drinks, our teeth are starting to look very gross!!
In order to see as much detail as possible in our final photos, we used a digital microscope to get up close to our teeth.
There was a lot that we could say about the results of this experiment and this is what we decided to conclude.
It's pretty scary what these drinks can do!!
