SUPERSPORT HOCKEY
9/6/2011
Yesterday saw a determined group of students compete at the Supersport Hockey competition at the Manawatu Turf. Both the girls and boys teams played hard in every game and only had a 15 min break between games. With support from each team and parents who also took time to come down and watch there was lots of excitement and enthusiasm. All students represented Ross Int with pride and determination. Both teams received a credible fourth placing with the girls team missing out by 1 goal. They also lost to the eventual winners by only 1 point, the closest of all the girls teams. Special mention to Tylah and Quentin (best hit to the head) who played hard throughout the whole day and also Maria for the girls getting the most goals and her commitment.

SUPERSPORT TOUCH
11/11/2010
On Wednesday the 10th of November, a group of talented Ross Intermediate students went to Monrad Park to compete in the Super Sport Touch Tournament. This included the major intermediate schools from Whanganui, Masterton, Levin and Palmerston North.
The Touch Teams put a lot of effort into their games and although it was sometimes hard, we still kept our hopes up and the Girls eventually made it into the finals. The Boys team placed 5th in their grade and the Girls team placed 2nd. It was a hard fought battle and although we lost the match, we earned the respect of all who watched - even the opposition team!
Thanks to Mr. Pomare, coach of the Girls Team, and thank you to Tom TePuni who coached the Boys Team. Also, thanks Tom for putting up the big tent for the group to all chill out in while we waited for their next games - we were the envy of all others.
All in all, it was a fantastic day and even though we didn't bring home a Banner, we still represented Ross Intermediate with Enthusiasm, Excellence, Determination and most importantly Respect.

ALL ABOUT OUR KAPAHAKA GROUP
8/11/2010
Forty students performed at the Te Pae Tamariki Kapahaka Festival for Primary and Intermediate schools in the Manawatu region this week. The festival was held at the Regent Theatre and provided the schools with an opportunity to present different aspects of performing arts.
Our entry on stage, (whakaeke) introduced our team and gave us an opportunity to acknowledge the different tribes (hapu) of the Manawatu area. Kararaina Te Puni did the call (karanga) identifying who we were and acknowledging the other groups and people at the performance. Te Ariki Te Puni as the male leader (Kaea) did the speech (whaikorero) introducing ourselves and the Manawatu region.
An ancestral song (moteatea) from the Manawatu region called Uiuinoa was taught by Papa Asa to the students, followed by an action song (waiata- a -ringa) Te Kura Waenga written by Mr Pomare about Ross Intermediate.
The poi was about New Zealand native birds and I would like to acknowledge the 27 girls who stood on stage as most of the girls had never been taught a poi dance before, and their efforts were met with exhuberant applause. The boy's haka was well received also along with the final song (whakawatea) was Piriponitia.
The team looked impressive with the the girls wearing new uniforms (kakahu). Congratulations on your performance!

FUN DAY OF KIWI GOLF
18/10/2010
Monday the 18th October saw four brave golfers
and two wonderful parents battling the elements at Palmerston North to be part
of a Fun Golf Day. They experienced almost all extremes of weather over the 9
holes played and it was great to see everyone smiling at the end—the sun shone
then also. Competition was pairs playing alternate shots and the scores
reflected the poor conditions.
Trooping upstairs for a welcome drink and prize giving was
next. Winners for the day were our very own Liam Finlayson and
James Scott. Our other team of Jake Summers and Euan Scott also played
competitively. Great behaviour and attitude was reported by parents and the
competition organiser. Congratulations to our four players and grateful thanks to our parent supporters, Don Finlayson and
Alvene Summers.

DANCE ACADEMY ADVICE: WEAR SUNSCREEN
24/9/2010

STUDENTS SHINE IN THE SPOTLIGHT
17/9/2010
Yesterday, over thirty, talented Ross students took to the stage with 'When I Get My Name in Lights' as part of the Northern Cluster Performing Arts' Festival at the Regent Theatre. Through song, dance and drama, they told the story of how a young performer, Honey Pie, found fame and fortune on both stage and screen. They delighted the audience with their tuneful singing, bright costumes, excellent props and polished routines. Their enthusiastic performance certainly proved that the Performing Arts are alive and well at Ross Intermediate.
ROSS STUDENTS SECOND IN NEW ZEALAND
15/9/2010
Last week Ross Intermediate students Cameron Foster and Blake Koolen were very busy battling other top New Zealand squash players in the NZ Alms Championships in Tauranga. The format allowed for players to play individually whilst also combining results in a teams event. Cameron and Blake warmed up for the event being part of the Ross Tigers team that won the local Intermediate Squash League for the second year running. In Tauranga, the boys finished in very creditable placings with Cameron finishing 6th and Blake performing well above expectation in 9th. Blake's only loss was when he had to play Cameron in the second round. This was Ross Intermediate's second year in the AIMS Championships, and even they hope to continue to do well over future years. Patrick Watts also travelled with the team and finished in the top 40. A big thank you to Shelley Watts for looking after the boys over the week.

ROSS GOES TO THE DOGS (AND CATS!)

DANCE ACADEMY COMPETES IN SUPER ARTS DANCE
16/6/10
The Ross Dance Academy headed to Wanganui to compete against other Intermediates in the Manawatu region in Super Arts dance. We were required to perform to one compulsory piece of music and one of our own choice (as long as it wasn't HipHop). Although we didn't come home with the banner, it is safe to say the competition was worried. The girls performed with professionalism and enthusiasm. We finished the day at the park with an ice cream to celebrate our success. Thank you to parents who helped with transport, hair and makeup - without you these events are not possible.
Click on the link to see more photos from the day or click here to see movies and photos from when the group performed in Assembly.

A SUCCESSFUL DAY FOR ROSS AT THE MANUKORIHI SPORTS EXCHANGE
14/6/2010

Mixed Football, Boys Football, Boys Basketball, Rugby, Hockey, 7A1 Netball, 8A2 Netball, Indoor Bowls
Some of our staff were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of some All Blacks who were also in town at the same time, pictured is our receptionist Jane with Conrad Smith. He must have been inspired by the meeting as he scored two tries the next day!

FOUR ROSS STUDENTS COMPETE IN THE MAGGI KITCHEN SHOWDOWN
11/6/2010
Four of Ross' talented cooks performed their culinary miracles in front of a Maggi camera crew this past Friday for their 2010 Kitchen Showdown. Alex Dinniss (room 3), Truely Rakautau (room 12), Ihaka Te Paki (room 11) and Daniel Nevin (room 2) were selected for their sound food technology skills and enthusiasm for cooking.
For the competition they were required to use 2 Maggi products to create their very own dish and '"Pasta a la Maggi ana" was what they came up with. This pasta dish was a clever way of using Maggi products with a Kiwiana twist! For three weeks our team has been working on on their creation in order to include everyday foods with flavors and a presentation style that would appeal to all kids.
Their recipe and footage of the team making their masterpiece will be available online soon here. So please cast your vote for Ross Intermediate so our enthusiastic team has a chance to prepare their meal on the Erin Simpson show!

MANAWATU JETS GIVE POINTERS TO YOUNG HOPEFULS
14/5/2010
Four players from the Manawatu Jets stopped by Ross this afternoon to lend their expertise to our Basketball Club members. They got some quality tips and even got to see a few shots by the experts themselves. One of the players (Richard) has come all the way from the States to play with Jets, as have several other team members. The Jets have a busy playing schedule this season which takes them all over the country to compete, but hopefully we'll see them back at Ross again as everyone involved had a fantastic time learning to appreciate the game just a little bit more. Click on the link below to see more pictures from today's session.

Seize the opportunity to try something new, learn a new skill, or fine tune the talents you already have. Whatever you do, don't be bored at lunchtime!

OVER $1000 RAISED FOR CHILE AID
30/3/2010
A very big thank you to our students who participated in two mufti days with a gold coin donation and a sausage sizzle over the past three weeks in order to raise funds to sponsor one of Chile 's towns that was struck by the recent earthquake . We are happy to report that we sold over 230 sausages and exceeded our target of $1000 in funds.
The town we have decided to support is called Santa Cruz and is located in the south of Chile. Santa Cruz is considered to be one of the most traditional towns in Chile and many tourists come to see the old vineyard estates and the traditional architecture. Unfortunately, many of the heritage buildings that were most popular in the town square were destroyed in the quake. Our aim is to support the restructuring of the town square monuments and be a part of bringing the square back to life!
We will keep you posted with our efforts. In the meantime, click on the link below to see the overwhelming support at last week's sausage sizzle.

ROSS WINS 5TH AT JUMP JAM NATIONALS 2009
11/2/2010
In case you missed the great news last year, 8 of our students travelled to Auckland to perform in the Jump Jam Nationals. They were one of ten teams from around New Zealand selected to compete in the Novice Year 7/8 division. The girls had an amazing time watching all the performances and sight seeing in Auckland. They came away with a trophy for 5th in their division, not bad for their first time at Nationals.
Ross Intermediate will be entering two teams into the competition this year and hope to be selected to attend Nationals again.
Be sure to check out photos of the girls performing their prize-winning dance on our Photo Page.

ROSS STUDENT WINS A HELICOPTER RIDE TO SCHOOL
9/2/2010
Daneika Burke, accompanied by some of her friends and family, touched down in style this morning! She was a nationwide winner of a helicopter ride to school run by Number 1 Shoes and the Edge radio station. Ross students and staff, the Manawatu Standard and representatives from the competition watched as Daneika flew high above their heads and landed in the Ross sports field. The HeliPro helicopter took a short time off from rescues to deliver Danieka and it certainly looked shiny, red and impressive in the morning sunshine.
Along with the visit, we were surprised with a great big check presented to Ross for $1000 from Number 1 Shoes! That will certainly buy a lot of new school shoes...
Check out the School Photos page for some snapshots from the morning.

SPEED DATING A HIT
On Friday the 18th September we woke and travelled to school at 5:45am! Still fast asleep, we were bundled into cars off to Wellington, to speed date an author. But it was sure worth it! There were a total of 6 authors that we travelled around to and had 15 minutes in which they gave us pointers on how to write a story. The authors that were there were, Maria Gill, Ruth Paul, Mandy Hager, Melinda Szymanik, Gavin Bishop, Tessa Duder. As we went around each author gave us a word and we have a month to write a story using those 6 words. Once speed dating was over we were let loose on Cuba street. Pies and ice cream for lunch then the extra bit of fun . . . SHOPPING!!!!!!!! Mr Butler is now nursing an empty wallet.

BLISTERS GALORE
Last week a team of girls from Ross Intermediate tested their Canoe Polo skills against 15 year olds at a tournament in Otaki. Great games were had and the girls fought hard against the older opposition.
CANOE POLO SUCCESS
On Thursday 17th September the Canoe Polo finals saw all three Ross Intermediate teams take to the pool for the top title. The Ross Intermediate Sharks concluded a perfect season with two strong wins to take the top title. The Ross Rays ended in 2nd place with the Ross Dolphins taking out third place with Intermediate Normal in a 5-5 draw.
SUPER ARTS Orchestra Win
A Super Arts banner was won by our Ross Intermediate Orchestra last Thursday!
Intermediate Normal School hosted a very enjoyable day of competition against other Intermediate schools, at which we won Ross Intermediate School’s first banner in a long time!
Our great band played “Why Does Love Do This To Me” and “Hotel California” very well, but the Super Arts Band banner was won admirably by Feilding Intermediate School. However our judge, Dave Edmonds, Head of Music from Feilding High School, made several good comments about our band, including, “I hope this group keeps together as you have a bright future.” Unfortunately half of these talented musicians move on to high schools next year so do come and hear them in our upcoming school production and at the break up! They are a great team with a terrific sound and spirit.
But yes indeed, we won the Super Arts Orchestra banner with “All My Loving” and “Time for Band”. Words from our evaluation sheet cited ‘good balance… confidence… tunefulness… support… group cohesiveness…’ and ability to ‘…follow their conductor well’ as some of many reasons for doing well. Skills, discipline, perseverance, focus and teamwork all paid off and we were, of course, over the moon to win!
Ross has never competed in a Super Arts Band or Orchestra competition before. For many of our members, this is their first band or orchestra and they have learnt so much and done so well. We are very proud of them: super students, super musicians, and Super Arts winners!

SUPERSPORT Soccer Win
Yesterday saw the Boy’s and Girl’s Super Sport Football teams travel to Levin for the annual Super Sport Football tournament.
The girls represented the school well on and off the field. While finishing in 8th position, they had a couple of close losses, including a heart breaking 1-0 defeat to eventual winners Feilding. A big thanks to Mr Rutherford who put a lot of time into the preparations for this tournament ...
