The Ross Dance Academy is designed to promote excellence in dance and those students who have won a position will represent Ross Intermediate at Super Arts Dance and Jump Jam competitions. Students will also be performing in assemblies, to contributing schools and will make at least one public performance during the year. Members of Dance Academy will be given the opportunity to watch professional dance and choreograph some of their own pieces.

Lorna Beauchamp, Director

I've been dancing for almost 20 years. I started by studying ballet, tap and modern. But as I grew older I decided my true love was theatre. I was often cast as a dancer in shows in Hawkes Bay. It was there I learnt different genres of dance including: 1930's Charleston, Rock 'n Roll and Romanian dance. I continued to study with my dance teacher until I was 15. It was then I took an interest in dance at my high school. I co-choreographed our entry into the 2002 Smoke Free Stage Challenge and we won the overall choreography award. The prize included a week studying with the Footnote Dance Company in Wellington. I was also featured in a interview on What Now and spent some time workshopping with the Royal NZ Ballet. In 2002, my last year of high school, I studied African dance for a week at the National Youth Drama School. Once I arrived in Palmerston North I spent some time in adult tap and jazz classes. I also attended night classes learning Hip Hop. Being so busy at University, I found dance hard to fit in. I found my true love of theatre again in 2008 and played the role of Sandra in "All Shook Up" and was a chorus member of "Disco Inferno" last year.

Now, I try to attend some night classes for Hip Hop and would love to study ballroom. For the past 3 years I have been actively involved in teaching dance to students. Jump Jam has been a passion for me in particular and I am looking forward to entering two teams into the competition this year.
